We have had enough of the pork barrelling and jobs for mates. My integrity policy is designed to close the loopholes and allow transparency to improve governance decisions.

During the last decade that the Coalition has been in power, we have watched on as multiple scandals have abounded - undermining our trust in government.

Geoffrey Watson shares his views on Joeline’s integrity policy (via Instagram)

As your independent member, I will fight to change this by:

1.    Strengthening the integrity institutions that keep the state government in check

2.    Introducing a transparent, merit-based process for public appointments

3.    Reforming the grant process and other government spending programs

4.    Introducing legislation to better manage lobbying

5.    Improving standards of honesty in political advertising

6.    Publicly display my voting record and donations

If party loyalists are parachuted into bureaucratic positions, we are not getting the most qualified or capable people for the job. Not accessing the ICAC report undermines public confidence in political party culture.

We’ve seen a Premier step down after being referred to ICAC as well as a Deputy Premier being embroiled in a “jobs for mates” saga.

Misuse of public funds for political purposes seemingly continues under the current Premier’s watch. Every day we hear another news story about branch stacking, pork barreling or manipulation of government powers for self-interest. It must stop.

Last year, the NSW Audit Office conducted an investigation into “pork-barrelling” and found significant problems.

Lobby groups and donors are having an outsized influence on politics in NSW and the big parties are signing documents to promise they will not talk about issues that help those donors and lobby groups.

The influence of lobbyists and donors with vested interests are stronger than ever – prompting NSW ICAC to commence a public inquiry into lobbying.

The response in 2021 to all the scandals and rorting from the government was, quite incredulously, to reduce funding to the very institutions that investigate suspect conduct. Whilst the current Premier reinstated the funding in 2022, he has not heeded calls from the experts to make future funding allocations for our integrity institutions arms-length from the government.
